EtherCAT servo line vs PROFINET IRT — when is the extra bus worth it?
The question
New packaging OEM wants EtherCAT drives and a Beckhoff or a 1500 with a third-party master. Plant standard is PROFINET. I can fight for one bus. What actually showed up in cycle time, and what showed up in spare parts?

IRT will run a packaging line. EtherCAT wins when the OEM already has the drives and the CAM tables. The plant pays later in a second spare kit and a second laptop. If TS Controls or the plant has to support it at 2 a.m., one bus is worth more than 400 µs.
