How did you get from maintenance tech to controls without a CS degree?

Night tech, 6 years, I can force bits and swap a 1794. Want to write the PLC, not just clear faults. What actually moved the needle — night school, a mentor, or writing the first AOI on your own time?

I took the ugly jobs nobody wanted documented, then I documented them. One well-commented routine beats a certificate you can't demo. Offer to own a small cell. Read the OEM manuals like they are the job. Degree helps HR. The floor hires the person who can get the line back.
